Mortising steps at 30 degrees

Last Sunday, five horticulture and landscaping trainees at the Euro-BBW and two employees landed safely on the Greek island of Crete, where a two-week natural stone course of the Chamber of Agriculture awaited them from Monday. Work on a meditation path of the Greek Orthodox Academy in Kolympari has been underway for several years as part of this natural stone course. This measure is supported by the EU programme Erasmus+.

At a sunny 30°C (felt even warmer on the construction site), trainees and trainers were also able to start to work immediately, which this year consists of the construction of an arched bridge and a well. At the construction site, the construction of steps and the further construction of stairs were started and in addition, foundations for the bridge and other altars were already laid. "Our trainees have been doing a great job so far and are currently building a staircase," reports Michael Hemmes, department head at the Euro-BBW and one of the supervisors on Crete, live from Kolympari. "In the meantime, the construction site stretches over the entire slope along the academy over a length of more than 300m".

Next week, the temperature on Crete is expected to rise to 36°C. At these temperatures, the already hard work for the course participants will probably be even more strenuous. Will the magnificent view of the sea still make them forget their efforts?

As far as protection against the corona virus is concerned, the group must always wear mouth-nose cover within the academy. It may only be taken off outdoors. In the evening, no one is allowed to leave the academy grounds, so that the group is on its own.

Here are some photo impressions of the construction site. We  wish everyone fun, good stamina and a nice and healthy time on Crete!
