In their last phase of attendance, the participants of our pre-vocational training course in material processing made chess boards with filigree wood inlays that are so beautiful you could almost become envious. Of course, they also made matching chess pieces from two different types of wood.

Unfortunately, fewer and fewer people master the millennia-old craft of marquetry, probably because it is very time-consuming and tricky. One person who has mastered it very skilfully for about 70 years is Heinz Echtermann, a carpenter from Mermuth in the Hunsrück region. He even runs a marquetry museum with his daughter, where you can admire his works. Some time ago, SWR filmed a report there on the subject of craftsmanship and documented the entire production of a chessboard. Our participants watched this video and wrote a report on it in the home learning phase. In the following attendance phase, they got down to the practical work. Our participants can be very proud of these beautiful chessboards made by hand.
