Finnish trainees discover the Eifel region

Five trainees in the occupational fields trade, culinary arts and home economics from Oulu/Finland experienced a two-week training period in the European Vocational Training Centre as well as in other companies in Bitburg. Thus, the exchange between the Luovi Vocational Institute and the European Vocational Training Centre, already existing since 2008, was successfully continued.

While winter had already started in Northern Finland when they headed for Germany, they felt the fall weather in the Eifel as an extension of late summer.

Here in the Euro-BBW they were supported by our trainees who went to Oulu in spring 2016 for internships; they helped their Finish colleagues to orient theirselves in Bitburg, they consolidated existing contacts and they could use their English skills again. The Finish trainees were accompanied by Ella Kanniala (teacher) and Timo Salo (educator), who were impressed by the hospitality of the Eifel region and the good training conditions.

Besides getting to know German vocational training and operational practice our Scandinavian guests visited also several tourist attractions during their stay such as Trier, the castles in Manderscheid and Vianden/Luxembourg, the maars in the Vulkaneifel or the Teufelsschlucht („devil's gorge“) in Ernzen. Furthermore, they combined the visit of the Moselle town Bernkastel-Kues with a wine tasting in Kinheim. These impressions were totally unknown as there are no vineyards or comparable historic monuments like medievel castles or Roman buildings in Finland.

Our guests experienced a special surprise at the ice rink: As Ida-Mari, one of the Finish trainees, is a passionate ice hockey player herself, the ice hockey team of Bitburg invited the Finish group to a game and to a meet and greet afterwards. We would like to thank again the ice hockey team of Bitburg for this big surprise!

It is planned to continue the cooperation with the Luovi Vocational College next year. These stays abroad within the framework of vocational training are sponsored by the European Erasmus+ program via the National Agendy (NA) Education for Europe at the Federal Institute for Vocational Training (BIBB) in Bonn.
