Antío Crete - Back again in rainy Germany

It was a sunny but very demanding natural stone course / work assignment in Crete for 5 landscape gardening trainees, 3 future joiners and two employees of the Euro-BBW. For two weeks, they worked on a meditation path for the Greek-Orthodox Academy in Kolympari together with other trainees from Rhineland-Palatinate.

This year’s stage of construction envisaged a big stairway at the chapel of Saint Makarios, a sundial and floor mosaics. For the stairway, they first had to mortise single steps out of the rock. For the pathways, the sundial and the mosaics they had to build surrounds. And in the meantime our trainees had to mix concrete, transport material, excavate, prepare bases and collect pebbles.

Our future joiners were put in charge of a tricky task: They had to solve the wickerwork of 50 chairs and rebound it again. Moreover they produced forms for different mosaics and a table for stone working.

Besides the practical – and also theoretical – work, our group had also time to discover the academy and the island. They made a guided tour at the olive oil producer Biolea and took a look at the oldest olive tree in Europe which is about 3000 or 5000 years old. The program also provided for a visit of the military cemetery in Maleme where 4,400 soldiers are buried who died during the battle of Crete. At the monastery Gonia, Prof. Zaffran introduced them into the academy’s herbarium.

Also fun was not missing during the weekend: by boat they went to Menies beach and to Paralia bay, visited the fortress of Aptera and went shopping in Chania.

This year, the trainees were highly motivated again and did a good job in Crete!

Their travel blog at https://euro-bbw.tumblr.com/ does not only contain funny pictures of the „sea party“ but also impressing photos and videos of the course and the site and beautiful pictures of the landscape, of course.
