Prof. Dr. Berthold Hornetz, co-ordinator of the COMENIUS school partnership in the European Vocational Training Centre Bitburg
An analysis of the cultural areas of these regions reveals that they had both many points of contact in the course of history:
Already situated at the most important connection between North and South from the Mediterranean Sea to the North Sea in Gallo-Roman times, the region played an important role as a European central axis. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Lorraine middle empire, at the beginning of modern times it was part of the New Burgundian Empire and was united later on under Habsburg rule.
This exposed situation in the centre of Europe and its natural landscapes lead to a thriving agriculture and commerce. Viniculture, brought in both regions by the Romans, acquired a special importance and with its history of more than 2000 years it has created a cultural diversity which presents the basis for a brisk tourist development - together with the biogeographic advantages. Today these regions belong to the most important European tourist regions.
One task of the project is the analysis of the common points and differences in the regions’ development.
Taks of the Bitburg group:
Six hours per week are accounted for the project "Dijon school partnership": two hours of French, two hours of technical training about different aspects of the partial subject “The travel region Eifel-Moselle" (amongst others tourism, gastronomy, furniture, architecture) and two hours of culture (and sports) aiming at the promotion of intercultural competence (eating habits, clothing, sports etc.).
The French class is differentiated into two groups according to the level of performance. The hours in French are respectively divided into two topics: one hour general language skills, one hour technical expressions.
Exchange:
The German and French pupils as well as their teachers meet for exchanges of respectively two weeks. Furthermore, the co-ordinating teachers realise a preparating meeting.
The Euro-BBW group was in Dijon from 1.-13.12.2003: The group was composed of 14 pupils of the training courses kitchen/housekeeping, tourist travel, office communication, media, information technology and was accompanied by 4 teachers (Mrs Cartus, Mrs Baus, Mr. Ohlmeier, Mr. Kirchhoff) and Mr. Vincent Merienne who prepared the exchange in the first week of November and co-ordinated it then on the spot.
The activities during the stay in Dijon were as follows:
